Dune 7

Climb one of Namibia’s tallest dunes

Rising steeply from the plain just east of Walvis Bay, Dune 7 is often cited as one of the tallest dunes in Namibia and is by far the easiest big dune to reach on the coast — you can drive right to its base on a tarred road. A shady picnic area with palm trees sits at the bottom.

The climb up the ridge is tough but short, and the reward is a sweeping view across the dune sea, the town and the ocean. Coming down is half the fun: run, roll or sandboard down the slip face.

Top things to do at Dune 7

Climb the ridge

Follow the crest rather than the steep face; allow 30–60 minutes depending on fitness.

Sandboard down

Adventure operators from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay run sandboarding sessions on the surrounding dunes.

Picnic under the palms

The shaded area at the base has tables and braai (barbecue) spots.

How to get to Dune 7

Dune 7 is about 10 km from central Walvis Bay, just off the C14 towards the airport. A normal car is fine. It is a good add-on to a Sandwich Harbour day, but it is no substitute for it — the Sandwich Harbour dunes meet the sea.

Insider tips

  • Climb early or late: the sand gets hot and the wind picks up around midday.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and a hat — there is no shade on the dune.
  • Barefoot is easiest on soft sand, but check the temperature first.
