Places to see around Sandwich Harbour

The Namibian coast between Swakopmund and Sandwich Harbour packs flamingo lagoons, seal colonies, pink lakes and the world’s most dramatic dunes into less than 100 km.

Most Sandwich Harbour tours visit several of these places on the way — the Walvis Bay Lagoon, the salt works and the Kuiseb delta — before reaching the dunes and the lagoon itself. Combination tours add Pelican Point by kayak, boat or 4x4. Here is what to look out for at each stop.

Greater and lesser flamingos wading in the shallow Walvis Bay Lagoon Walvis Bay

Walvis Bay Lagoon

Flamingo capital of southern Africa

A Ramsar-listed lagoon on the edge of town where tens of thousands of flamingos and pelicans feed — the first stop on almost every Sandwich Harbour tour.

Cape fur seals resting on the beach at Pelican Point with the lighthouse behind Walvis Bay

Pelican Point

Seals, dolphins and a lighthouse at the end of the sand spit

A long sand spit sheltering Walvis Bay, home to a huge Cape fur seal colony, pelicans and a historic lighthouse — perfect for kayaking and marine cruises.

Salt Works & Pink Lakes

Candy-pink ponds on the edge of the desert

Vast solar salt evaporation ponds south of Walvis Bay, tinted pink by algae and brine shrimp and busy with flamingos — a surreal stop on the way to Sandwich Harbour.

Dune 7

Climb one of Namibia’s tallest dunes

A towering, easily accessible dune just outside Walvis Bay — great for a sunrise climb, sandboarding and a picnic under the palms at its base.

Swakopmund

Namibia’s adventure capital, 35 km north

A charming seaside town of German colonial architecture, cafés and a historic jetty — and the most popular base for Sandwich Harbour tours with hotel pickup.

How it all fits together

Swakopmund (north) → 35 km → Walvis Bay and its lagoon → Pelican Point on the sand spit to the west → south past the salt works & pink lakes → the park gate and the Kuiseb delta → the dune belt along the ocean → Sandwich Harbour lagoon, about 55 km south of town. Dune 7 lies inland, just east of Walvis Bay near the airport road.
